The Ten Commandments

The Law Begins with Grace: The Decalogue opens not with a command, but a declaration of redemption: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt…” (Exodus 20:2). This preamble frames the Law as a response to grace, not a prerequisite for it.

Theological Insight: Covenant obedience is always rooted in divine initiative. The Law is not a ladder to climb toward God—it is a lamp given by the God who has already drawn near.

Pastoral Note: When teaching the Ten Commandments, begin with the gospel. The Law is not a burden imposed on strangers, but a gift entrusted to sons and daughters redeemed by grace.
